whatever is is a piece for prepared piano, percussion and simple waveforms
The score of whatever is consists of two independent sets of 25 A-3 sized pages; one set for the prepared piano, the other for the percussion. Each page in either of the sets features four systems (two staves per system). In addition there is an (optional) part for square waves and band-pass filters which is written as code and executed in the program SuperCollider. The notation of the parts is parametric — spatial distances between events on the page, are to be interpreted as relative intervals of time. Relative, because no tempo is prescribed — any page can be played at a tempo chosen by the performer. Likewise, no order in which the pages should be played is given; a reading of the work can consist of any number of pages played in any order within a time frame with no fixed lower or upper limits. An interpretation of whatever is allows a variety of instrumentations. A rendition of the piece may feature only the prepared piano or percussion, one or the other + the electronic part, two prepared pianos, two percussionists, etc.
